What is Solid State Lighting (SSL)
Solid State Lighting utilizes LEDs as sources of illumination rather than electrical filaments or gas. (Also see "What is LED?" and "The technology behind LEDs")
The term "solid state" refers to the fact that light is emitted from a solid object - a semiconductor or other photo-reactive material.
